Sopra Steria supports the German Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance in extending the functionalities and migrating its NINA warning app to the Cloud

The BBK (German Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance) has entrusted Sopra Steria, a European leader in consulting, digital services and software development, with the migration to the Cloud of its NINA alert application as well as the development of new functionalities and its operation.

The federal emergency information and notification application NINA was designed to warn civilians of impending dangers such as floods, storms, fires, accidents, World War II bombs and terrorist attacks.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, NINA has also provided information on the evolution of local incidence rates and regional health restrictions.

Almost nine million German citizens have already installed NINA on their smartphones and the application sends them up to several hundred million notifications every month.

New features and a redesigned infrastructure for the cloud

BBK and Sopra Steria will work together to completely redesign the application from both a functional and technological standpoint. Sopra Steria will migrate the infrastructure to the Cloud - in compliance with German and European security standards, regulations and accessibility requirements - operate the application and improve its functionality.

The Group was awarded this contract in the context of the Federal Government’s European call for tenders.

“As a partner to federal and regional government authorities, we are delighted to be at the forefront of civil protection reform. They will benefit from our end-to-end expertise, from design and development to permanent operation,” says Markus Schlosser, Division Director Public Sector at Sopra Steria.
