Why Hafslund’s preparation for AI rollout was as vital as the technology itself

| minute read
Hafslund worked with Sopra Steria to pilot and then support its implementation of Microsoft 365 Copilot in the business, enabling it to implement a solid but business-safe starting point for new ways of working across the renewable power group, as well as helping to establish a competence centre for AI as it extends its use further.

A renewable energy company’s debut into AI

Hafslund is a Norwegian renewable energy group with a 130-year heritage, offering solar, wind and battery power solutions. Its Hafslund Kraft division is Norway’s second-largest hydropower producer, running 83 hydropower plants that produce enough power for 1.2 million homes.

Its Hafslund Celslo division is Norway’s largest district heating supplier, operating more than 700km of district heating pipes under Oslo and supplying district heating and cooling to 400,000 people in the capital.

The group’s head office is in Skøyen, Oslo, but it operates from several locations across southern Norway.

The desire for a strong foundation for the use of AI

Hafslund began working with AI in 2024, but wanted to ensure it did so responsibly, offering staff a safe, secure environment that met strict security and privacy requirements and which could provide the foundation needed to explore new ways of working. This was especially important for a business that is responsible for critical infrastructure in Norway.

Hafslund wanted to begin with a pilot implementation of Microsoft 365 Copilot, before expanding AI’s use to additional areas and applications within the business.

A solid basis from which to explore new opportunities

Sopra Steria worked with Hafslund to launch a pilot project based on the secure foundation Hafslund had demanded. Sopra Steria assessed privacy and information security and examined how to introduce artificial intelligence in a controlled manner.
The pilot involved around 30 employees, after which the company decided to invest in Copilot more widely as an AI tool.

As well as contributing to the implementation of the pilot, Sopra Steria helped develop a series of guidelines and training modules, establishing a governance model and framework for ongoing AI management at the company.
Sopra Steria has also helped to establish a dedicated competence centre for artificial intelligence at Hafslund.

“Microsoft 365 Copilot was an important starting point, but the work was always about building a foundation for further use of artificial intelligence. This covers everything from skills development and guidelines to new ways of working and future application of AI.

A successful adoption of AI

Sopra Steria’s work with Hafslund has helped ensure a successful rollout of AI within the business, with a significant proportion of employees now having adopted Copilot. Sopra Steria also continues to work closely with Hafslund employees, using staged, structured training to help them understand how the technology can create value for their work processes.

After a basic introduction to guidelines and use of the tool, additional courses, workshops and individual follow-ups are offered which are tailored to different professional environments and working situations.

This planned and considered approach to AI has helped drive employee engagement and therefore adoption of the technology. Hafslund has also created a network of superusers who share their experiences and support other colleagues in getting started with AI.

In addition, the adoption of AI and language models has helped Hafslund identify connections and gaps in data that were previously difficult to detect, ultimately improving work processes and decision-making further.

Going forward, Hafslund plans to explore how agents and more advanced AI functionality can be adopted as the technology and framework conditions mature, while still focusing on security, privacy and cost-benefit considerations.

“Artificial intelligence will never be better than the data it is built on. This is therefore also about improving data quality and making information more accessible. Only then can we realise the really major benefits.”
