AI for Software Engineering with AI Backbone

AI Backbone is Sopra Steria's European AI harness for AI-first software engineering. It turns our delivery know-how into workflows and skills that AI agents run under human quality gates, each task routed to the best-fit model, so AI can take on the whole software lifecycle without taking away your control.

Part 1 · Why and what

How is AI-first delivery different from AI-assisted coding?

An AI-assisted team uses a coding assistant, prompt by prompt, on isolated tasks. An AI-first team redesigns delivery so that agents run complete workflows, from specification to production, and engineers approve each step. The question is no longer whether generative AI helps software engineering, but how to run it at enterprise grade: predictably, securely and at a cost you can plan.

01

AI-assisted

Retrieval-based assistants help with simple, isolated tasks.

02

AI-agentic

Agents run more complex, multi-step workflows under supervision.

03

AI-first

Delivery methods are redesigned around AI, end to end, from specification to production.

Where AI Backbone operates.

What is inside the AI Backbone harness?

We do not hand software construction blindly to a language model. AI Backbone is an agent harness: the skills, workflows, routing and controls placed around the models so that their output is reliable. It defines, in small, verifiable steps, what each stage of delivery must produce, in line with the Group’s quality standards.

Skills Library

Our delivery know-how, written as code: inputs, mission, guardrails, steps and quality controls for each task, for greenfield and brownfield projects.

Model gateway

Routing rules send each request to the best-fit model, using the smallest adequate one and avoiding waste.

Orchestrator

Runs the agents through explicit workflows, with human checkpoints and a simple interface to steer execution and feedback.

Guardrails & compliance

Data protection, traceability, security, secret protection and human validation are enforced.

Part 2 · Inside the harness

How the harness works

The orchestrator picks. The workflow runs stations in a fixed order. At each station, an agent applies the skills that describe the task, then a gate checks the result before anything moves on. AI Backbone runs workflows this way, from the assessment of existing systems to new feature delivery and modernisation.

How the harness works How the harness works

The diagram shows four nested circles that represent the layers of the AI.Backbone harness, from the outermost to the innermost.

The outer circle is the Orchestrator, which chooses the workflow. Inside it is the Workflow, which orders the stations. Inside the workflow is the Station: one step, with its skills and one quality gate. At the centre is the Agent: a model plus tools, applying the station’s skills.

A caption below the diagram reads: “Each layer only exists to constrain the one inside it.”

Part 3 · Strategy

Transparent, sovereign and compliant by design

The choices that keep you in control of your delivery chain: which models you use, where they run, and no vendor lock-in.

AI Backbone is built around 6 guiding principles

AI-first by designWe redesign delivery methods to put AI first, rather than layering it on top of existing workflows.
Predictable and industrialisedProven, repeatable workflows replace endless experimentation that wastes people's time and compute.
Model independenceThe harness works across models and vendors, so you can switch as innovation moves, with no lock-in.
Token-frugalPrecise skills and optimal execution paths let smaller, cheaper models deliver comparable results.
Compliant by designBuilt around European regulation from the start, including the EU AI Act and GDPR.
Lightweight and deployableMostly text managed as code, it runs on developers' workstations and serves people who are not AI experts.

Which AI models does AI backbone use, and where do they run?

AI backbone is model-agnostic. It routes each task to the best-fit model among frontier, commercial, European and open-weight models, hosted on vendors' platforms, hyperscalers, EU-owned data centres or on premises. When AI runs your delivery, access to models becomes critical infrastructure, so we secure it by diversifying both the models and where they run.

No single supplier decision should be able to stop your delivery.

Token spend is now a major delivery cost. It must be stable, competitive and measurable.

For defence, security and space, models run on your premises or with trusted European partners.

AI backbone routing AI backbone routing

The diagram shows how AI.Backbone routes each task to the best-fit model and infrastructure.

In the centre, a circle labelled “AI.Backbone routing: best-fit model for each task” links two lists.

On the left, under “Models”, four types of AI models: frontier models, top-tier commercial models, European models and open-weight models.

On the right, under “Infrastructure”, four places where the models can run: model vendors’ own platforms, hyperscalers, EU-owned data centres, and on premises, ours or yours.

A bet on open-weight models. We share our expertise in running open-weight models in secured environments, so hybrid delivery can combine top-tier models for complex tasks with smaller models for the rest.

Part 4 · Working with us

Top talent, European scale, real investments

AI backbone is built and tested by Sopra Steria engineers, selected from a group of 50,000 people in nearly 30 countries and one of Europe's major tech players. The Group is investing so its clients can move to AI-first software engineering, from a first demonstration to delivery at scale.

What can Sopra Steria deliver with AI backbone?

Sopra Steria brings the harness, the engineers who built it and the scale of a European group, and makes them work in your context, on two levels: AI-first transformation, to prepare your organisation for higher productivity gains, and AI-first software engineering, to deliver work that was out of reach.

Level 1

AI-first transformation

The precondition for higher productivity gains. We accompany your organisation through the change.

  • AI infrastructure: multiple LLM alternatives from different vendors: US and EU, cloud and on premises, large and small models.
  • Client skills: the Skills Library customised to the reality of your organisation.
  • Change management: bringing your workforce along, with new ways of working.
  • AI FinOps: token optimisation, spend control and management of token limits.
  • Innovation: experiment, learn and industrialise new trends and tools.

Level 2

AI-first software engineering

Use AI backbone to deliver work that was out of reach.

  • Eliminate technical debt and obsolete technologies
  • Run major application modernisation programmes
  • Deliver larger, more complex projects with confidence
  • Plan AI delivery on measured cost and quality
